Background: Michael was born in Chicago, Illinois, in  1935. His father died in 1944 at the WWII Battle of Monte Cassino. His mother worked as a waitress to support  Michael and his younger sister, Erin. As soon as he was  able, Michael began working in a warehouse by the docks  to help pay the bills. When he wasn't working, Michael and  his friends ran around together, committing the usual  working class delinquent acts. However, the police eventually caught up to them and spoiled their fun. Michael  was put on probation under the guidance of a local priest  who volunteered to help troubled youths.

This priest turned Michael's life around and gave him hope  for the future. A year later, the priest was found brutally  murdered in an alley. Michael choose to follow in his   mentor's footsteps, by going to a seminary to become a  priest. After seminary school, he was accepted to Creighton University for graduate theological studies. In  1962, shortly after giving a guest sermon at the local  church, Michael was attacked by a vampire. Rather than  kill Michael, the vampire brought Michael into the ranks of  the undead.

Unfortunately for Michael, his new "creator" did not care  for the usual responsibilities that come with creating a new "life". More often than not, he was left to fend on his own. The years spent coming to terms with his new identity were years of torment as he struggled with losing both his life and  his faith. Finally, after the years of pain, not to mention          being constantly hunted by Midwestern red-necks, Michael  decided to leave familiar territory. He set out eastwards  towards a destination that he had heard spoken of, a place  called Sanctuary.
