MEDICAL EXAMINER'S OFFICE

**These are mainly NPC that anyone can use. But don't kill them off without Gil's permission!

They handle any death outside a hospital or someone not under a doctor's care for a serious illness (if you have terminal cancer and die at home, for example, they probably won't handle the death). Anything else is treated as an unexplained death requiring investigation. Someone who knew the victim well must formally identify the body (despite cop shows, it does not have to be the nearest relative, just someone they designate; I know this from experience, because I sent a good friend to identify my late first husband, because I couldn't face doing it at the time). In Sanctuary, it is generally handled by showing the identifier a Polaroid of the face, unless it becomes necessary to actually have him.her view the body--then it is done by viewing through a glass window shoe blinds are opened for the viewing, then closed immediately upon the I.D. being made. No metal slabs, no body bags pulled from a freezer. Facilities are up-to-the minute and high-tech, with a special vault for vampire victims so they don't kill the staff when they rise.

JENNIFER ALLEN

At age 56, she has served as ME for the city for the last 15 years. She has silver hair in a page-boy, green eyes, and elegant WASP bone structure, and resembles former Congresswoman Pat Schroeder. She is a brisk, no-nonsense type, but has a wealth of compassion for the families whose loved ones' post mortems she must oversee. She also has a surprisingly bawdy sense of humor and can out cuss truck-drivers (and has)--too many years hanging around cops. Favors soft tailored clothing (longer challis skirts, tucked blouses with lace, a tailored blazer) over business suits. She has a child by her first husband, who was killed in a car crash 9 years ago; she has since remarried to Doug Trent, a local real estate developer. Her son lives in NYC now, where he is a stockbroker.

BILL MARLOW is the senior asst.. medical examiner and next in line for the job when the boss retires in a few years. He's 47, a mellow, easy-going guy.

His blond hair is fast fading to gray and receding at the temples, but he is still a nice-looking man who spends his free time on the tennis courts or sailing the family boat with his much-loved wife Georgie and their grown sons (when they are home: Bill Jr..'s a pilot in the Air Force stationed in Florida, and Jim's a law student at Stanford). Georgiana Cohen-Marlow is a prominent attorney specializing in business and real estate law.

RAFAEL "RAFE" Hernandez was in line to be the liaison to the SCTF, but he turned it down. The darkly handsome descendant of an old Spanish family that dates back to the early days of Spanish rule here, he hates vampires, and for good reason. His wife Andrea (never famous for her fidelity; she'd had two other affairs before the crucial last one) was seduced by a vampire and changed. Once she rose (she left a living will that did not allow her to be staked), she walked out on Rafe and their daughter, and he had the marriage annulled once vampires had legal status (he was considered a widower till then). He's a devout Catholic, a bit conservative, but vampires are his main problem. He and Maeve are pals. He's 36, lives in a pleasant but unspectacular suburban house with his kid. Didn't want to deal with vamps or to get constant calls to crime scenes from the Task Force. Very bawdy, very sweet guy who likes to rib Maeve about her lack of male companionship (he flirts, and would kind of like to ask her out, but you don't date at work).

PEGGY MONAHAN is Jennifer Allen's personal assistant, and head of the clerical staff. She's black Irish--dark hair, dark eyes, pale skin--and looks like Disney's Snow White if she were a 35-is cookie-baking Mom. She mothers and bullies the whole office, and is smart as a whip. Her husband Tom's a cop.

KEISHA TAYLOR is the supervisor of the word processing section who type up all the transcripts from the post mortems and test results. She is 29, nearly 6 ft tall, and looks like an African carving--deep-brown skin, black hair cut short, striking features. She got pregnant at 16, dropped out of school, was on welfare for a year or two, then got her G.E.D. and used student loans to put herself through community college to become a medical secretary. Word processes 12o wpm, has a mind like a steeltrap, and is studying to become a paramedic (they'll hate losing her, but it's time for her to move one--she's too smart for her current job). She's a single mom who adores Jamil, her teenage son, and has the usual worries about drugs and bad influences (moved to Sanctuary to get him out of L.A.). She'd love to find the right guy, but he had better have a decent job, be reliable and willing to be a father to her son and any other kids they might have---but only if they're married. She is smart and tough and terrific fun to have around.

MAEVE DESMOND --see her bio

SUPERNATURAL CRIMES TASK FORCE (Soon to be Division)

This was established after vampires received legal status allowing them to be held responsible for their crimes. It also meant you have to prove they did something before they can be staked--same for any supernatural. The team investigates ANY crime with a supernatural angle to it. Scams, rapes, assaults, thefts and homicides are under their aegis.

LIEUTENANT JEFFERSON DU BOIS is the detective who heads the task force. He's a career cop in his early 40's, born and raised in the Louisiana Bayou, and he looks like Avery Brooks (Sisco on DEEP SPACE NINE, Hawk on SPENSER FOR HIRE). He is brilliant, with a B.A. in criminology from LSU and a masters in preternatural studies. Very competent and with a tough, decisive manner, he is surprising gentle with victim's families. A good man to have on your side. No special beef against supernaturals, because his grandmother was a voodoo priestess, as is his mother. He follows voodoo as a religious choice, but is not a priest himself.

DETECTIVE MIKE CORELLI--a bright, funny, slightly cocky guy on the fast track (like to give Maeve a hard time; is her best pal among the cops). Think Sly Stallone when he is in a suit and tie and his little horn-rimmed glasses--an Italian Stallion who has more women chasing him than any one guy has a right to have. Very dapper. He and Maeve have gone out a couple of times, but as friends only )she's too independent for his taste).

ANNE CARLEN--She's the youngest member of the team, and just made detective. They sent her here because her degree was a double major in criminology and comparative mythology. She's a tall, slim blonde who is pretty enough to be a model (and she did locally, while in college). Very sleek-looking, short hair, brown eyes, a tan. She's sometimes comes on a bit too strong, but she's learning. Now if only Mike Corelli would NOTICE her...

TOM STRAVINSKY--In his 40's, he's the personification of the phrase "crusty old cop." Only this one has a master's degree in psychology, with courses in preternatural bio and mythology as well. When he retires, he plans to become a counselor and work with troubled kids. A heart of gold where anyone under the age of 20 is concerned, the one crime he can't stomach is anything involving child abuse. There was a vamp pedophile in Sanctuary--but not for long once Tom tracked him down. He volunteers his time to a home for runaways and tries to get the underage hookers off the street. Doesn't care if they are weres, vamps, or humans; to him they are all just kids who need a break and some love. He's got plenty to go around. Was married, but she died of cancer, and while she was dying his college-age son got into drugs and ODed. He's lonely, and is currently dating a divorcee with 2 kids. Don't know if it will work out with Jean; I think he should ask out Keisha myself.

DA LEWIS SCHAPIRO is the prosecutor. A good guy in his early 40s, he's going to resign after this term and join a law firm. His ex-wife keeps him strapped for funds, and his two (Susan and Lewis Junior) are hitting high school with college not too far off. He needs a better salary than his current job pays. Compassionate but tough on crime, he'd rather see kids get help than send them to jail (but if they screw up again, he throws the book at them; once is a mistake, twice is a pattern). No beef against supernaturals unless they break the law. Doesn't hound them, and will drop-kick any of his staff who treat a supernatural who's a crime victim badly--his motto is a victim's a victim. Especially tough on rapists (including the vampire variety--does a bite without consent constitute rape or assault if they only drank a little blood?).

JACK SPENCER--see his bio

PETER COCHRAN MONROE III---he is Maeve's least-favorite member of the staff, but as second-in-command he is someone she endures. California-blond and tanned Peter looks like he should be gracing the deck of a yacht. He favors Armani suits and custom-made shirts and silk ties. He's a good lawyer, but he sometimes cares more about winning than justice--convictions matter more to him than whether maybe the defendant should be charged at all (he's the type who tries an abused wife who shoots her husband after he has beaten her black and blue for murder one....)His father's a California Supreme Court judge and was on the short list for the Supreme Court under Bush. Peter's ambitious, plans to run when Schapiro retires, then run for Congress after a bit. Age 32, educated at Yale and Harvard,he;s very bright, just not very nice. Oh, yes, his nickname among the women cops, ME staff and those in the DA's office is The Prick (as a play on his middle name). He tends to almost sexually harass pretty ladies---but always alone, never where anyone can be a witness--and never QUITE crossing the line. He's a jerk, and a guy who thinks women should be Mommies and nothing else. He plans to run for DA and Congress on a Family Values/Humans First platform. He's a bigot. Newt Gingrich as a DA. Does he actually believe it or is it just a good campaign angle? He's not telling, and is very popular with a certain well-heeled right-wing crowd. Not married, but looking for a wife. Thinks Maeve (with money, beauty, and intelligence) would be perfect choice for a rising star on the SANCTUARY political scene. She DOES NOT agree.
